Our View:

Spelling is undoubtedly important and forms a key part of developing fluency when writing. However, in some young people, it has the capacity to instil dread; feeling they cannot and never will be able to spell. This negativity can stay with young people into and throughout adulthood, compounding a sense of inadequacy.

From learning the first sounds to the most complex words, spelling should never be feared. Whether young people have a diagnosis of Dyslexia or not, learning new words should be fun, purposeful (taught alongside reading) and always targeted towards the young person’s individual needs.

Over the past few years, I have researched barriers to spelling and devised strategies to support hundreds of children of all ages, across schools. If you would like to know more, contact us for free, tailored advice.
