Our View:

Children are now born into a digital world, which undoubtedly gives them fantastic opportunities to learn; develop new skills and to keep in touch with family and friends. However, just like the real world, it is important young people stay safe and that you (as parents and carers) feel fully equipped to help them develop the knowledge and resilience they need for digital life.

Digital life comes easy but the implications can potentially hit hard.

As well as useful tips, this page aims to collect all the latest advice from organisations dedicated to keeping children and young people safe online (see useful links).

Our Tips:

We all hope for the best but would like to think that if the worst happened, our children would come to us first. However, it is a difficult balance to achieve sometimes as the online world can represent a call to independence for young people. Therefore, open, honest and continuing dialogue with your child is key, with the aim of working together to stay safe whilst giving young people freedoms to enjoy the online world:

  • Have regular conversations about staying safe and being respectful online (you could begin with the links below)

  • Explore the online world together (having them teach you is a good way to start)

  • Work together to agree what is and what isn’t acceptable online

  • Review your family’s control settings
